Sapwood

About

Where wisdom becomes growth.

Almost nobody is short of good ideas about how to live.

The trouble is when they arrive — after the remark, after the reaction, after the day has already been spent.

Sapwood exists to move one of those ideas earlier. Something old, made small and plain enough to still be with you at four in the afternoon, when it would actually be of use.

Nothing is promised. What tends to change is unremarkable and worth having: the number of times you notice something, and the distance between noticing and reacting.

What it is not

There is no tradition to join and nothing to believe.

If you already have a faith, nothing here competes with it. If you have none, nothing here is smuggling one in.

The name

The pale ring just under a tree's bark is its only living layer — the part carrying the water. Not the visible part, and not the structural one.

The part where growth is happening.

Made by a small number of people who wanted it to exist, with no names on it. The words are far older than anyone working on them.

What it draws on, how a day is shaped, and how it grows over time are on the next page.
